Earrings, except for Clip-ons & Magnetic Earrings are usually Ear jewelleries that attach to ears through a piercing in the earlobes or some other external parts like rook, tragus and accross the helix. Earrings are worn primarily by women but has became more & more popular among men recently. Cultures & History of Earrings

In some countries like Thailand or Myanmar, women wear carved elephant tusks in their ears as a sign of beauty and they are well known of their "Long Ear" culture today. In many of the Islamic Countries, only females are allowed to get their ears pierced however in Pakistan, the first-born son would have his ears pierced to show their significance for being First-Born son. In Southern India, most children will get their ears pierced in ceremony before they reached 5 years old. According to some historical books, Jews & some Chinese tributes identify their slaves by piercing in the slaves' earlobes.

Heavy earrings worn over a long period may lead to enlargement of earlobes, many teenagers have intentionally enlarge their earlobes as a fashion expression despite of the risk to being torn. Many peoples do believe that wearing earring at right ear could be perceived as a gay and this has been used as a tool to identify among themselves a decade ago. However, due to the lack of uniformity, it has became essentially meaningless and men just wear earring as a canvas of fashion without having to worry about their identity today.
